Reunited college-rock favorites The Feelies “have completed mastering tracks for a new album” — the highly influential New Jersey combo’s first new record since 1991 swan song Time for a Witness — that is slated to be released sometime in 2011 on Bar/None Records.
Howlin’ Wuelf Media, the Feelies’ publicist, announced that “the legendary and influential rock band” mastered the album titled “Nobody Knows” at TANGERINE MASTERING in Weehawken, N.J., with bandmembers Bill Million and Glenn Mercer producing and Tangerine’s Andreas Meyer engineering.

Between forming in 1976 and dissolving in 1992, and through some lineup adjustments, the Feelies produced four albums, including its classic 1980 debut Crazy Rhythms, featuring layered guitar work that would influence bands such as R.E.M. Since reuniting in 2008, the band’s classic lineup has performed sporadically, including some dates this past summer, and reissued both Crazy Rhythms and sophomore album The Good Earth both of which were mastered at TANGERINE by Andreas Meyer.

One of the biggest questions in the mastering business is how clients should be prepared before arriving to the mastering session. Although every mastering facility’s requirements are different, we’ll discuss some of the most common ways of being properly prepared for mastering.
Proper preparation WILL save you time and money. Sometimes it even results in a better overall product. As with any part of the record-making process, the mastering process is an incredibly creative, momentum driven process. When that momentum is stopped with a technical problem, such as “bringing the wrong mix,” the mastering engineer must change mindsets from the creative to the technical. Most of the time, this is not a problem. However, when technicalities and problems with the clients preparation come into play throughout the whole session, any form of momentum is hard to achieve. This could result in a very un-creative, stale mastering session.
Delivery Formats
Although there are many acceptable mix delivery mediums, some are definitely better than others.
When mixing to 1/2” or 1/4” Analog Tape, there are many factors to keep in mind when mixing to prepare yourself best for mastering.
. •The kind and quality of tape used is critical. We are not in a day and age anymore where high-quality analog tape is available everywhere and anywhere. Most of the tape produced today is not being manufactured under the same rigorous standards as 20 years ago. Ensure that you are using the best tape available to you.
. •The fine art of aligning tape machines is not practiced daily anymore. In many cases, it is rarely performed by engineers in today’s primarily digital environments. To worsen the situation, tape machines themselves tend to not receive the proper care that they need from studio owners. What this means for us is that we can no longer trust will full confidence that our mixes to tape will sound as they should once they leave that specific studio’s environment. Our recommendation is for clients to bring a digital safety copy .
. •We have the facility to “BAKE TAPE” – some formulations of older tape age poorly – baking them at an exact time and temperature in a specially designed oven can restore the tape for a few plays- contact us for details

Cheval Sombre is one of our favorite projects for the last year- catch a rare appearance at the KNIT – we will BE THERE !!
Knitting Factory Presents:
Spectrum
Cheval Sombre, The Vacant Lots
One man band Cheval Sombre emerged in the early 2000s, writing and recording songs in an apartment studio on the Hudson River, NY. After sending initial recordings to Sonic Boom (of Spacemen 3 / Spectrum), recording sessions with Sonic took place in March 2006, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Further sessions followed over the next two years, both in Rugby, England and in New York City, with guest musicians Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips.
On April 28, 2009 Double Feature Records (label operated by Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips) released the debut full-length CD by New York’s Cheval Sombre. Eleven tracks, including the three UK-only 7” singles originally released on Static Caravan and Trensmat, all of which sold out immediately and are now collectors’ items: “It’s a Shame”/”Little Bit of Heaven”, “I Found It Not So”/”Where Did Our Love Go?” and “I Sleep.”
Rumour has it that work on a new album is underway.

Brian Goss – (“The Firing Line” one of Tangerine Masterings favorite projects) is having a video release party at THE BOWERY ELECTRIC
http://www.reverbnation.com/briangoss
Full band performing songs off The Firing Line and new material,
Gary Pozner (Tom Tom Club) on piano for this show!!!”
Like Jeff Buckley, he connects with first, himself, than the audience. Neither shy away from discordant strangeness or familiarity, creating uncommon pop music with claws. Distinctive, artistic personalities abounds in every song. ” — Phil Rainone, Jersey Beat
“Brian has re-emerged with confidence, showing off his mellow side, and the results are a cinematic and yet very lively poignant series of songs ranging from breathy, resigned piano balladry to country-tinged forays into marijuana country. ” — Morgan Y. Evans, Crusher

*****Its the small little details that make a great record – take time to edit your instruments and make sure that your rhythm section is tight.
*****Be open to other people’s ideas, otherwise it only means you are insecure about your own.
*****Tangerine Mastering in New York City – one of the best mastering suites in the US – JAMBA THE PRODUCER LOVES YOU!
*****A producer must have the ability to connect on a personal level with ALL the people involved in the record.
*****In Brazil working out of Zen Studios on a vintage 8232 board – yes! you should be envious!
*****A producer should always first consider the artist’s opinion and then quickly dismiss it because it is always wrong! LOL!
*****a producer’s greatest enemy is his fear of failure. Dont be afraid to make “musical mistakes!” Try stuff!
